Marine Mammal Stranding Center

Since 1978, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) has responded to more than 3,800 calls requesting help for dolphins, whales, seals, and sea turtles that washed ashore on New Jersey beaches.

“The overall goal of the environmental education program is to foster in students a sense of wonder in the environment and provide an opportunity for students to discover the diversity of marine mammal life.”

– Shelia Dean, co-director Marine Mammal Stranding Center

Located in Brigantine, New Jersey, the MMSC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to responding to marine mammals and sea turtles in distress along New Jersey’s waterways and rehabilitating these animals for release into the wild.

Educational Outreach

The center offers educational programming to area schools. The program brings a hands-on learning experience to the classroom. Students learn about marine mammals and sea turtles, and the problems they and their environments encounter. They discuss how human activities impact marine habitats and the role the center plays in helping to resolve these issues.

These animals range from a five-pound Kemp’s ridley sea turtle to a 25-ton humpback whale (both of which are endangered species).

Subaru Support

A grant from Subaru of America Foundation helps support in-class and distance learning for schools in Camden and Burlington counties. MMSC expects to roll out the program in 2012 with a minimum of 40 elementary students receiving on-site visits and distance learning in these counties.

The MMSC was started with a handful of volunteers and a grant by Robert Schoelkopf. He and his wife, Sheila Dean, continue to work with the animals.
