Green Means Go
We get it: You love how your Subaru performs. How it handles. How you might forget that it’s just another drive to work. How camping trips take on a safari-like feel. How icy switchbacks become the conquering of Mount Everest.
But doing it all with incredible fuel efficiency? Well, that’s not luck – it’s the horizontally opposed engine. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. And an exceptionally light and compact, yet ready-for-anything Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) on select models … and loads of additional mechanical and design considerations.
After all, the best kind of power is the kind that knows when it’s needed and when it’s not.
Output That’s All Good
Lots of folks think they have to sacrifice “get up and go” to be more environmentally friendly – except Subaru owners, that is. Many Subaru models are designated as PZEV, which stands for Partial Zero Emission Vehicle1.
What’s that mean exactly? It means the engine produces the lowest amount of tailpipe (greenhouse) emissions of any gasoline-only engine. In fact, using a gas-powered lawn mower pollutes the air more than Subaru PZEV models. (File that under, “So crazy it’s true.”)
How’d we get emissions so low?
- Tighter-closing fuel injectors
- Finer mesh and a higher volume of precious metals in the catalytic converter
- Expanded effective cleaning surface
- An Engine Control Module (ECM) that delays ignition timing, helping the catalytic converter heat up to operating temperature more quickly (reducing cold-start emissions)
