Subaru Camden Works supports residents of the southern New Jersey city across a variety of education and job training initiatives.

Subaru of America is moving its headquarters to Camden this year, but its ties with the New Jersey city run more than three decades deep. “We’ve long supported organizations in Camden,” says Sandy Capell, the manager of corporate responsibility and philanthropy at Subaru. Given the relocation from nearby Cherry Hill to Camden, however, it was important for Subaru to hit the ground running and begin making positive changes in its new home immediately. “This is going to be our new community,” says Capell. “We feel a responsibility to help with its improved vitality and livability, so it’s a place that people love to live and work.”

To get things rolling, Subaru started Subaru Camden Works in April 2016. The program focuses largely on job skills and employment opportunities for local residents, but funds and support go to a range of initiatives that help make Camden a vibrant place to live. To that end, Subaru Camden Works partners with a wide range of local organizations in the city. Nonprofits like Camden Schools Foundation and Girls Inc. focus on education and empowerment for underserved youth, while Joseph’s House and Habitat for Humanity combat homelessness and provide housing. The Cooper Foundation and Hopeworks ’N Camden, meanwhile, deliver professional training for Camden residents. And Respond, Inc. is a job skills organization that covers a range of trades, including automotive tech training. The newly created Subaru University program welcomes top participants to intern in its service shop and continue their education after graduation.

All told, the Subaru of America Foundation contributed more than $1.2 million to the city through Subaru Camden Works before the end of 2017. Capell points out that Subaru and its employees are excited to continue finding and funding programs based in the community that make a difference. “We’re providing opportunities, whether for job training, for homes or for how to change your life,” she says.

We want to have an impact. If we help even one person change the path of their life, we’ve been successful.
