Last year, Subaru of America, Inc. simplified and clarified the Outback and Legacy model lines. All Outback models are wagons, and all Legacy models are sedans. They share a chassis/unit body platform, features, and their manufacturing plant (Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc., in Lafayette, Indiana).
While similar in many ways, Outback and Legacy appeal to divergent interests.
At the Outback line’s foundation is a spirit of fun, freedom, and adventure. This was The World’s First Sport Utility Wagon, a multifaceted tool that helps enable an outdoor lifestyle. It’s as much at home splashing through the mud and clawing up mountain trails as it is taking kids to school.
Subaru Legacy Sedans are stylish and smart, both in design and intelligent features. They offer an athletic and safe AWD driving experience with power options that range from efficient to high performance. Set up for racing in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series (mostly stock, including the exhaust system), Legacy Sedans compete on level ground with higher-priced brands known for their racing capabilities.
The current-generation Outback and Legacy were introduced for the 2005 model year. (See the Summer 2004 issue of Drive.)
