1974 Subaru DL Station Wagon

Our collector also has picked up a 1974 Subaru DL Station Wagon. Although in need of restoration, it’s in better shape than the XT Coupe.

L SERIES BACKGROUND

Known as the Leone in other parts of the world, the Subaru L series consisted of three models in the United States in 1974 – a sedan, station wagon, and coupe.

These cars featured front-wheel drive, and, with a curb weight of 2,100 pounds, they were relatively economical to operate for that time period. Road & Track magazine measured fuel consumption at 26.5 miles per gallon with normal driving. The Environmental Protection Agency listed mileage lower – 22.7 or 21.5 miles per gallon, depending on the reference source. With those figures, the DL Station Wagon led its class in fuel economy.

STANDARD COMFORT/CONVENIENCE FEATURES

Although sparse compared with today’s automobiles, the four-passenger DL Station Wagon had a solid list of standard interior features when compared with its contemporaries. These features included carpeting, tinted glass, cigarette lighter, flow-through ventilation, and an AM pushbutton radio.

The wagon’s interior also featured reclining front bucket seats and a fold-down rear seat. It had an anti-theft spare tire.

Exterior features included radial tires. Numerous articles refer to the DL Station Wagon’s one-piece hatch, which was new for the 1974 model year, replacing a two-piece system of the previous year.
