A Moment of Magic by Joanne Cleaver 5/27/2016 Subaru Love Promise and Make-A-Wish® America Make Children’s Wishes Come True William Stuhlreyer was only nine months old when he was diagnosed with Barth syndrome, a hereditary condition that weakens muscles, undermines heart function, and erodes resistance to infections. He loves soccer, but playing was out of the question, so he became a super fan instead – especially of German soccer team FC Bayern München. An international trip to see the team play live in Bavaria seemed impossible, especially given the military family’s modest resources. Make-A-Wish, supported by the Subaru Love Promise initiative, provided William an unforgettable experience, whisking him and his family away for a weeklong trip to Germany to see FC Bayern München play in person. William even got to hang out with his favorite players post-game in their locker room. An article published in a German newspaper about William’s wish went viral, says William’s mother Kim, enabling the family to spread the news about little-known Barth syndrome. It was a way to share our experience, and to educate the public about this disease. Since 2007, more than 1,200 wishes have been granted from over $10 million donated to Make-A-Wish through the Subaru Loves to Help and Share the Love campaigns. William’s wish was one of 15 granted from a $156,150 donation from the Subaru Love Promise in 2015. This is just one of the many ways that Subaru of America, Inc. and their retailers make a positive impact in the world and in their neighborhoods. Read more about the Subaru Love Promise.
