The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Subaru of America send warmth and comfort.
The challenges faced by blood cancer patients are far-reaching − they cover the physical, financial and emotional realms, to name a few. Beatrice Abetti, director of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Information Resource Center (IRC), understands this reality firsthand. The LLS is the world’s largest health agency dedicated to blood cancer, and the IRC is their toll-free call center staffed with master’s level healthcare professionals ready to offer information on all blood cancers. Beatrice and other IRC specialists serve patients struggling with everything from understanding diagnoses and treatment options to having the financial wherewithal to fight what is often a reoccurring or chronic disease. That’s why she encourages her team to address patient issues holistically. “We need to brainstorm so that we give a comprehensive picture of what’s available,” she says.
Abetti’s approach is part and parcel with LLS’ comprehensive mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. This includes funding research, providing a variety of patient support programs, and advocating for state and federal laws to ensure patients have access to the treatments they need. Abetti is particularly proud of two unique services LLS offers: financial assistance for treatment and insurance premiums, and a clinical trial service. These solutions get right to the heart of many patients’ most dire needs.
Warmth and comfort − both physical and emotional −are also needed by Abetti’s clients. Subaru of America is proud to have partnered with LLS in 2016 to help meet these needs. Subaru retailers across the country sent messages of hope from their local customers to blood cancer patients nationwide and donated more than 30,000 blankets. Abetti describes this initiative as providing a welcomed and overlooked service. “Patients spend long hours in the infusion chair and often don’t think of bringing a blanket with them,” she says. “Having something warm and fuzzy during treatment is appreciated.”
Subaru looks forward to partnering with LLS again to spread warmth, comfort and love to patients fighting cancer across the country.
