In the early 19th century, Americans traveled great distances over unknown territory on the promise of new farmland, hunting grounds, business opportunities, and an overall better life. They left their homes in the East and followed a general path paralleling the sun for months at a time.
My own 1,500-mile wagon trek – far from the one inspired by Manifest Destiny – came by way of a 2013 Subaru Outback Limited and a vision painted by a colleague’s recent experiences. My colleague was fresh off a solo tour on his scooter – a man’s scooter, he contends – from southern California to Washington state.
Of the highlights he recounted on this unique escapade, the Oregon coast was what caught my attention. He enjoyed the highly acclaimed cliffside roads of Big Sur, but was captivated by what materialized along Highway 101 north of the California border. I instantly was sold on this sparkling endorsement.
