Adventures Without Limits – Youth Empowerment

Adventures Without Limits (AWL) manages educational adventure trips for all ages and abilities. Its programs reach more than 25,000 individuals annually, including 16,000 youths. The trips inspire personal growth, instill confidence, develop peer relations, and enhance environmental awareness, plus they’re fun.

A grant from the Subaru of America Foundation will enable adventure trips for an additional 200-plus at-risk, lower-income youths from the Portland, Oregon, metro area during the next year through the Youth Empowerment Program.

The grant will help kids from two alternative schools and a homeless group to experience opportunities they normally wouldn’t have. The program offers 10 to 15 trips, including kayaking, snowshoeing, caving, and rock climbing. The kids are provided with proper clothing, equipment, and instruction.

“Adventures Without Limits made it both safe and possible for me to face squarely one of my worst terrors, and, in doing so, I have been able to make one of my lifelong dreams come true. I ‘sea kayak,’” commented Andi Smith, past participant.

Kris Williams, Adventure program director of AWL, explained, “Our hope is to do more throughout the year, to do more the next year, and to keep building it up, so we can create a strong partnership to serve the program year after year.”
