Delivering Outdoor Adventures
Subaru and Nantahala Outdoor Center Provide Gold Medal Opportunities
Subaru of America, Inc. and Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) partner to offer a positive experience in the outdoor environment.
The 500-acre headquarters in Bryson City, North Carolina, with its dense forest, rushing rivers and deep gorges, provides a variety of outdoor experiences. Whether it’s zip-lining above the lush Nantahala National Forest, or hiking, biking or river rafting through it, visitors enjoy the natural surroundings.
Noted for whitewater rafting, kayaking and canoeing adventures, the NOC is known for its competitive spirit. In the 1992 Barcelona Games, two NOC athletes participating in Whitewater Canoe Slalom, Scott Strausbaugh and Joe Jacobi, won gold in 2-person canoe. This year in Rio, NOC athlete Michal Smolen made it to the semifinals in men’s kayak. He is a member of the Nantahala Racing Club, which is also sponsored by the NOC. The club provides competitive instruction in whitewater slalom, wild water and freestyle events. Smolen learned to paddle on the Nantahala River at the age of 9 with his dad and National Team Coach, Rafal Smolen, leading the way.
The importance of getting people of all ages outdoors to enjoy nature rings true for both NOC and Subaru, which supplies the NOC with a fleet of Forester and Outback vehicles. “The Outback vehicles are regularly used to shuttle guides to and from river outposts,” says NOC President William Irving. “The Elite Paddling School instructors enjoy the versatility of the Forester, which allows them to mount four boats on the roof rack, leaving plenty of room for paddles and wet accessories in the cargo area. The versatility of our Subaru fleet is like none other.”
