Subaru debuted the all-new Crosstrek Wilderness at the 2023 New York International Auto Show, the third entry in a family of capable, overland-ready vehicles.

The smallest of the three Subaru Wilderness vehicles, the Crosstrek Wilderness adds features that have made the Forester Wilderness and Outback Wilderness so popular with overlanders and outdoors people: taller ground clearance, an upgraded suspension, all-terrain tires, unique interior and exterior design, better towing capacity and advanced technology. The Crosstrek Wilderness starts at $31,995.1

The Subaru Wilderness Concept

As with the other two members of this family, the concept of the Crosstrek Wilderness is to take a popular SUV and adapt it for overlanding and trail adventures based on what current owners are adding to the base model.

Social media is awash with every generation of Crosstrek with aftermarket suspension mods, rooftop tents, all-terrain tires and accessories that help their owners use their Crosstrek as a mobile base camp.

The Crosstrek Wilderness is built for that and weaves in specially calibrated advanced technology to provide better safety and confidence both on and off the highway.

Crosstrek Wilderness Mechanical Updates


The Crosstrek Wilderness is powered by the same 2.5-liter direct-injection SUBARU BOXER® engine under the hood of the Crosstrek Sport and Limited, with 182 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque.

The Crosstrek Wilderness has a revised differential gear ratio, for snappier performance both on and off the highway. The Crosstrek Wilderness has a 4.111 final drive ratio versus the highway cruising 3.700 final drive in all the other trim levels, which allows for better climbing ability.

A retuned Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) provides optimal traction at low speeds and on slippery surfaces, another upgrade that the aftermarket simply can’t offer. Finally, the addition of a transmission oil cooler more than doubles the Crosstrek Wilderness model’s towing capacity up to 3,500 pounds.2

Crosstrek Wilderness Suspension Improvements

Even at the base level, the Crosstrek has among the tallest ground clearance in the segment at 8.7 inches. But the Crosstrek Wilderness eases over off-road obstacles with 9.3 inches of clearance at the lowest level. The Crosstrek Wilderness has longer coil springs and shock absorbers, specially tuned to help maintain performance in all driving conditions.

On the trail, that longer suspension travel helps to keep tire tread in contact with rough surfaces, and better damping on the compression stroke helps keep the bumps from intruding into the cabin space.

Thanks to unique front and rear fascias and the taller ground clearance, the approach angle – the maximum angle that a Crosstrek Wilderness can climb an obstacle from level ground without touching the front bumper – increases from 18.0 degrees to 20.0 degrees. The departure angle – the maximum angle a Crosstrek Wilderness can descend onto level ground without touching the rear bumper – increases from 30.1 to 33.0 degrees. Breakover angle – the maximum ramp angle that a Crosstrek Wilderness can climb over without touching the underbody – moves up from 19.7 to 21.1 degrees.

The Crosstrek Wilderness is shod with Yokohama® GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, the same rubber that the other Wilderness family members wear. Mounted on exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels in matte-black finish, the tires are embossed with raised white letters.

Crosstrek Wilderness Interior Design

The seats of the Crosstrek Wilderness are upholstered in water-resistant Subaru StarTex® material featuring an embossed Subaru Wilderness logo on the front headrests. Copper-colored contrast stitching accents the interior and complements the anodized copper-finish accents on the shifter, gauge meter rings and steering wheel.

Standard all-weather floor mats have a unique Subaru Wilderness design, and in the cargo area, a removable water-resistant rear cargo tray protects the load floor. An LED light on the inside of the rear gate provides nighttime visibility for loading items in the cargo space.

The Crosstrek Wilderness comes standard with the SUBARU STARLINK 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system. The 11.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen is equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay®3 and wireless Android Auto™4 with full screen display. Additional features include Bluetooth®5 hands-free phone and audio streaming connectivity; AM/FM stereo; rear-vision camera; SiriusXM®6 All-Access Radio and SiriusXM Travel Link®7 (four-month free Platinum Plan); HD Radio®8; and over-the-air updates.

The Crosstrek Wilderness is also equipped with a standard wireless phone charger in the center console.

Crosstrek Wilderness Exterior Design

The front and rear fascias are both unique to the Crosstrek Wilderness and help to provide the vehicle’s impressive ascent and descent angles. The hexagonal front grille is also unique to the Crosstrek Wilderness, and the larger wheel arch cladding and metal front skid plate help to reduce trail damage.

The Crosstrek Wilderness has LED fog lights that pick up design elements from the grille. The Crosstrek Wilderness has an anti-glare hood decal in matte-black that it shares with the other members of the Wilderness family.

On the roof, the ladder-type roof rack system has a 176-pound dynamic (or moving) load capacity, with a 700-pound static (or parked) load limit. That allows for the use of a rooftop tent,9 and the rack is suitable for a range of other Genuine Subaru Accessories available from your favorite Subaru retailer.

Crosstrek Wilderness Off-Road Technology

The Crosstrek Wilderness is equipped with dual-function X-MODE® with Snow / Dirt and Deep Snow / Mud modes.

Each mode optimizes the engine output and CVT ratio positions and increases the Active All-Wheel Drive engagement and enhances the control logic of the Vehicle Dynamics Control with Traction Control System.

The X-MODE display features a Roll-Angle Indicator to help the driver judge potentially hazardous situations.

When X-MODE is activated, Low Speed / Low Ratio Gradient Control is automatically put on standby to sense when the vehicle is traveling on a steep incline at low speed. When it does, the system shifts the CVT to its lowest ratio for better climbing and throttle response. Combined with the Wilderness model’s lower differential ratios, the system also enhances rough off-pavement, low-speed drivability over rocks and other situations that require repeated on/off accelerator usage.

Hill Descent Control is standard and automatically engages individual wheel braking control on downgrades at under 12 mph with the accelerator pedal pressed less than about 10%, allowing the driver to focus on steering around obstacles without having to worry about braking or throttle inputs. Active Torque Vectoring, standard on all 2024 Crosstrek models, enhances handling stability on road or trail.

Crosstrek Wilderness Standard Safety Tech

The Crosstrek Wilderness includes all the standard safety technology of the rest of the Crosstrek lineup. Award-winning EyeSight®10 Driver Assist Technology includes Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control,11 Pre-Collision Braking,12 Pre-Collision Throttle Management,12 Lane Departure and Sway Warning,12 and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert13 – previously standard only on the Crosstrek Limited – are included with the Crosstrek Wilderness. 

Automatic Emergency Steering is relatively new and was first introduced on the 2022 Forester. It was previously only available on the Limited trim. Working together with EyeSight®10 and Blind-Spot Detection13, the system assists with steering control to help avoid collisions at speeds lower than 50 mph. Reverse Automatic Braking is also standard, fully applying the brakes if an object is detected by the rear-facing cameras.

Crosstrek Wilderness Production and Availability

Like the other 2.5-liter equipped Crosstrek models, the Crosstrek Wilderness will be produced at Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. The 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness will arrive at retailers in the fall of 2023.
