In July 2021, my wife and I drove around Ring Road in Iceland. Our 1,174-mile trip took seven days.

As Subaru owners, we were fortunate to rent a Subaru Forester. The only time we didn’t drive was when we took the three-hour ferry ride to Iceland’s Grimsey Island. At Grimsey, we took the hike to the Arctic Circle.

The rented Forester parked on a gravel lot with a glacier in the background.

Our journey began eastward on the Ring Road. We stopped at places like the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Black Sand Beach, Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. Diamond Beach was named because broken glacier pieces along the shoreline look like diamonds glistening in the sun.

The sun set at midnight and rose again around 3 a.m. The weather was cold at night and 60 degrees Fahrenheit or so during the day. But we also experienced cool wind and misting rain.

As part of our journey, we took unpaved roads such as 939/95 and 864. These roads were dusty, bumpy and rut filled. The all-wheel drive handled it well. Even though the unpaved roads of Iceland were rough, the end result was worth it.

We hiked trails to waterfalls. In addition, we took the trail to the Fagradalsfjall Volcano to finalize the splendor of the land of fire and ice. The Blue Lagoon was our final place to rest and relax.

Nothing I say could explain the majestic beauty of Iceland. Iceland is a place that needs to be experienced with a drive around Ring Road. The reliable Subaru helped make our journey enjoyable.
