Cares for Learning

Shortline Subaru
Aurora, Colorado

Laurie and Don Hicks, owners of Shortline Subaru, are proud parents and grandparents – they simply love children. For the 2016 Share the Love event, they raised $36,000 for Porter-Billups Leadership Academy. Porter-Billups provides academic and leadership training to at-risk youth in Denver and the surrounding area, and nearby Regis University is committed to offering program graduates college scholarships. “We have an awesome relationship with the Hicks and Shortline Subaru,” says Lonnie Porter, co-founder and executive director of Porter-Billups. “They’re very caring and giving people. They support these kids to the max.” As part of the 2016 Share the Love event, the Hicks also raised $80,000 for My Lifeline Cancer Connection, an organization that empowers cancer patients and caregivers to build an online support community of family and friends.

Cares for Kids

Subaru of Kennesaw
Kennesaw, Georgia

When Subaru of Kennesaw found out that they could contribute to two hometown charities for the 2016 Share the Love event, they realized that their passion was to support children with special needs. The retailer raised $20,000 for Camp Twin Lakes, which provides year-round camp experiences for children with serious illnesses, disabilities and other life challenges. The goal is to help each camper grow in their confidence and experience the joys of childhood. That $20,000 generously enhanced the camp’s scholarship fund and allowed 39 children to attend camp this past summer. “At camp, a child who uses a wheelchair can fly down the zip line; a child with a heart defect might learn how to swim for the first time; children in foster care are reunited with their siblings; and all our campers get to spend a week learning and having fun with other kids facing the same challenges,” says Merrick Bonner, development manager of Camp Twin Lakes. “We are so grateful to Subaru of Kennesaw for making these transformative camp experiences possible.”

Additionally, the retailer raised $8,000 for Beyond Limits Therapeutic Riding, which provides therapeutic horseback riding and other services for children and adults. Thanks to the donations, a horse trailer was purchased to haul the horses to local shows and to their big event: Special Olympics Georgia. “Previously, we had no means of transportation,” says Dr. Kimberly Oviedo, co-founder and executive director of Beyond Limits Therapeutic Riding. “Now we can compete in very important events thanks to Subaru.”

Cares for Pets

Patrick Subaru
Shrewsbury, Massachusetts

There’s nothing like looking into the eyes of an animal that needs a home. With many animals in central Massachusetts in need of warm beds at night, Patrick Subaru partnered with Worcester Animal Rescue League (WARL) for the 2016 Share the Love event and raised $28,000 in just a few weeks. As a result, the pets at WARL will receive vital medical care – something many of these animals are in dire need of. “Everything from standard vaccines to emergency surgeries can be covered because of the support we receive from the community and programs like the Subaru Share the Love event – we’re so grateful,” says Allie Tellier, executive director of WARL. More good news? WARL is a limited intake shelter, meaning there are no time limits placed on the pets: They remain in the safe care of WARL until they’re adopted. Could your heart feel any warmer?

Cares for the Earth

Bob Rohrman Subaru
Lafayette, Indiana

The home of Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, is also notable for its abundance of natural beauty. Bob Rohrman Subaru wanted to help preserve the local habitat, so they partnered with NICHES Land Trust for the 2016 Share the Love event to raise $5,000. NICHES’ mission is to protect, restore and sustain northern Indiana’s ecosystems by providing habitat for native species and offering natural environments for education, appreciation and enjoyment. In fact, the Share the Love donations allowed the organization to run a week-long summer camp for 11-14-year-olds who wanted to learn more about the environment and conservation. “Working with Bob Rohrman Subaru has been instrumental in allowing us to reach a whole new sector of our community,” says Julie Rubsam, development director of NICHES Land Trust. “We’ve never had a corporate partnership that has engaged with us on such a high level.” The generosity of Bob Rohrman Subaru also extended to Loving Heart Animal Shelter for the 2016 Share the Love event. They raised roughly $8,000, which essentially covered the shelter’s rent for the year and ensured continued safety for the animals in their care.
